Doesn’t the sound of Coffee Chats & Yoga Mats immediately suck you into a happy zen-like state? Friends. Wellness. Conversation. Action. A splendid idea.
Unfortunately, my life doesn’t typically fit that zen state. Right now it’s downright uncertain. (More about that later.) This blog is my effort to slow down, reflect & learn from others. We’ll see how that goes. Postings will be guided by two primary principles.
The Principles
1. All of the world’s problems can be solved over a cup of coffee.
At least that’s what I’ve concluded after the countless chats that I’ve shared with friends. Like most friends, we’ve talked about the day-to-day aspects of life: academics, jobs, careers, future plans, romance, family, friends, & other typical topics.
Inevitably, though, we veer off into other paths, a few of which include gender stereotypes & representation in the media, commercialization, communication successes & failures, social etiquette, education systems, individual awareness & development, group dynamics, holistic wellness, life organization, morality, spirituality, Christianity, Biblical history & analysis… & the list goes on.
The purpose of this blog is not to brag about all of the high-minded ideas & solutions we’ve developed to create our own version of Utopia. We’re not the only idealistic dreamers who wish to change the world from what it is to to a better version of what it could be.
Each of us has something to offer the world through our thoughts, words & actions.
That’s what this blog is all about.
The goal is to bring those conversations here & see where the dialogue takes us.
2. Living with vinyasas metaphorically and literally.
Vinyasas are basically Yoga flows – when you smoothly move from one position to the other.
Here’s a fantastic definition from Wikipedia:
Maehle (2007: p.294) defines vinyasa as: Sequential movement that interlinks postures to form a continuous flow. It creates a movement meditation that reveals all forms as being impermanent and for this reason are not held on to.
Life is a continuous flow of changing roles, responsibilities, relationships & settings. Unfortunately (& fortunately), you can’t compartmentalize life. You must learn how to flow from one moment to the next. You learn to embrace the challenges & support you gain in each experience (Nevitt Sanford – that’s you!).
Another aspect of this blog is uniting these thoughts with action & the “real world.” Life is complicated, but you have to learn to roll with it & enjoy it.
Let’s get writing, dreaming & living.
